How to Care For Your Granite Countertops

Granite Countertops have remained the most popular choice for kitchen upgrades among homeowners and home builders for many years. Granite countertops are incredibly tough, tend to be heat resistant, and are easy to clean. Avoid abrasive kitchen cleaners, and instead opt for a mild dishwashing detergent and warm water. Harsh cleaners can do damage to the protective seal on your granite countertops.

If you see water stains on your granite countertop, simply blot them up with a gentle, dry cloth. These stains are temporary, although to prevent them altogether, make sure that your granite countertop has a protective seal on it.

Stains that appear because of organic sources, like coffee cup rings or fruit juice, will look brownish-pink in appearance. The stain may disappear on its own as soon as the source of the stain is removed. If it doesn’t, simply take a cotton ball or paper towel and soak it in bleach. A pancake batter-like mixture of baking soda and acetone left on the countertop for 24 hours can get rid of a stain on your granite countertop caused by oil. Just as in the case of organic stains, once clean, you should seal your granite countertop.

Repairing Countertop Damage

We have installed many different types of countertops for homeowners and home builders over the years, which means we have also taken out lots of old countertops too. The choices that homeowners and home builders have these days for countertops is almost endless. While many countertop options are highly durable and made to last a very long time, damage can still occur. Like most things, the more expensive the countertops are, the higher quality there are and the less damage you are likely to see. However, regardless of the price of the countertops, damage repair is usually possible.

Countertops can be susceptible to scratches. While specialty pens can repair laminate countertops that are scratched, the process for repairing scratches on, say, a granite countertop is more complicated that that. The repair would include several steps, but it can be done!

For laminate countertops, use toothpaste. For porcelain countertops, use baking soda and water, and for steel countertops, use club soda. One common mistake that homeowners do is use harsh cleaners to clean their countertops. If you want to extend the life of your countertops, warm soapy water is your best option.
